Believe it or not, three legged stool is more stable than any other stool. The principle underlying is this fact is we can draw only one cirlcle through three given points which are not collinear. That is why old people walk with the assistance of a stick (third leg) , or even think of tripod.

In view the basic reason behind this is that a triangular (especially, a triangle) is much rigid than any other polygon (it may be because its the first polygon..but i don't know that)..consider,a table wid 4 legs, if u lift its one leg up it will topple but a tripod will not..so the basic reason lies..
